"Artemis Fowl" by Eoin Colfer is a series that follows a young criminal mastermind named Artemis Fowl and his rival with an evil pixie, Opal Kaboi. Visit the website to learn more about the characters, watch videos of author Eoin Colfer, and play games related to the series. "A Series of Unfortunate Events" by Lemony Snicket is a series of books that follows the three Baudelaire children in their unhappy adventures. The website has summaries of each of the books, videos, quizzes, games, and more! "Alex Rider" by Anthony Hopkins, is a series of spy stories following undercover teen agent, Alex Rider. Visit his website to learn about his missions, characters, criminals, and top secret information. "Redwall" by Alex Jacques is a series of children's novels that features multiple talking animals, magic, mystery, and adventure. Check out the website to find more details on each of the 22 books. There are plenty of adventures for you to choose from if you were to select a "Redwall" book for your report. | "Little House" book series by Laura Ingalls Wilder were some of my favorite books when I was growing up. They follow the Ingalls family as they move from the big woods to the prairie and onwards. Over the years, these books have inspired television shows and films that I used to watch with my mom and grandma. I even have the cookbooks and activity books. A lot of these resources are available on the Little House website. Be sure to check them out! The "Dear America" series feature over a dozen stories of young women in various moments of historical importance. Their stories are shared through fictional journal entries and have inspired many PBS movies. This Scholastic series has a website that includes information about the authors, read excerpts of the books, check out the fashion of the time, and find recipes from the different time periods. My favorite book is Margaret Ann Brady's journal about being on board of the Titanic. These books are very similar to the "My America" books, which are more for 2nd and 3rd graders. The "My Name is America" books follow the journals of young men in America and how they were involved in important time periods. "The Chronicles of Narnia" is a collection of seven books based in the magical land of Narnia. The one you might have heard of is "The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe," as there are a few movie adaptions of the story. These books by C.S. Lewis are classics in children's literature. I highly recommend you check them out. |

Happy Sunday!
As you know, our class has a goal of reading at least 55 minutes a day throughout the month of April. This includes spring break! One of the reasons I love spring break so much is because I have extra time to sit down in a quiet place and read. Usually when I am on spring break, I bring 2 or three different books with me on my trip. I can read in the car or on the plane for a little bit until I get dizzy or fall asleep. I love to read when I'm sitting by the pool or when I am on the beach. Reading also helps me to relax before going to bed. This past Christmas I felt like the luckiest teacher in the world when I was gifted over 100 books for my future classroom! I was so excited, I cried! I have not had a chance to read all of them yet, so I'm hoping to read one or two of them this week. The book I started last night is called "The Lemonade War" by Jacqueline Davies. One of the reasons I chose to read this book is because the author has the same name as me. :-) Also, I always used to sell lemonade over the summer when I was little, so I think I will be able to connect to this book very well. This is the first book of the Lemonade War series, so if I like it I might have to find the rest of the books! My challenge for you today is to find a new book to read over spring break. You can visit the local library where you are staying, check your grandma's bookshelf, pick up one at a store, or check your hotel/resort concierge. Sometimes people leave books for others to rent and read. Comment to let me know what book you are going to read. After you are done reading the book, come back and type a second comment that includes a short summary and rating. I'll be sure to check out the books you are reading and, if you like it a lot, I might even add it to my classroom wishlist. Happy Reading! -Miss B Shared Reading: Detail Diagrams This week in Shared Reading we learned how to grab important details about a topic from a non-fiction text and organize it using a web diagram. We also learned how to pull details from a non-fiction text and put them in chronological order using a timeline, flow diagram, or cycle. Your Weekend Challenge is to pick a topic of your choice from a non-fiction source and organize the details you find using one of these detail diagrams. Today, Miss B and Miss Nagy traveled to Grand Rapids to volunteer at the Michigan Reading Association Conference. This is a really important weekend for Michigan teachers, especially if they love to read books! Each day is filled with different talks about books, reading, writing, and more! Teachers from all over Michigan come for these four days of fun to learn tips about teaching and find new books to share with their students. We feel very lucky to be asked to be a part of it.
We spent most of our morning helping other attendees find their way to the big conference room so that they could check-in. We also helped make sure everyone had everything they needed in their goodie bags they received. We talked a lot about the different authors who will be visiting and speaking this weekend. One of them is Sharon M. Draper, the author of "Out of My Mind," a book I know some of you read last semester. Miss Nagy and I both have many seminars we want to attend over the weekend. We are very excited to be a part of this conference and can't wait to share what we learn with you! When we are not at the conference, we both have a lot of homework and planning to do. Miss Nagy and I will both be teaching science this week, so we hope you are excited for that! See you on Monday! -Miss B |
