I was SO excited for math today! My fantastic students found out why as soon as they opened their math books; it only took them a few seconds to realize that the picture in their book was of The Sunken Garden at Kensington Palace in London, England. Naturally, I took the opportunity to share some picture of my visit to The Sunken Garden this past summer... I will talk about my study abroad trip to London whenever I can but especially when it relates to our lesson.
Being the smart students that they are, multiple hands were raised during our discussion to share observations and questions about the areas and perimeters in The Sunken Garden. After talking for a bit, the students began to see that there is a lot of math involved in a garden! A few of my pictures are below. What math do you see in them? Here are some questions to get you started.

- What elements make up the area of The Sunken Garden?
- What is the perimeter of The Sunken Garden made of?
- How many different areas and perimeters do you see inside the garden?
- What units would you measure this garden with? What units would you measure the water with?
